Woodstock, IL is a great city to call home. There are plenty of places to go for live music. You can find many delicious restaurants, and there are many outdoor recreation areas within driving distance of the city. If you feel like you need a break from your usual city routine for a day or weekend, read on to learn more about our favorite state parks within driving distance.

1. Moraine Hills State Park

Moraine Hills State Park is one of our favorite places to go to enjoy a day full of outdoor activities. Fishers, birders, hikers, bikers, and skiers alike can enjoy a wonderful day in this day-use park.

Roughly 1,100 acres of this state park comprise lakes and wetlands, and over 200 bird species have been spotted in this state park. Also, there are over 10 miles of trails for everyone to enjoy. Just keep in mind when planning your day that you should be back at your car 15 minutes before sunset.

2. Chain O’Lakes State Park

We also love visiting Chain O’Lakes State Park at 8916 Wilmot Road. This state park can be found nestled among Grass Lake, Nippersink Lake, and Marie Lake. You can also access the Fox River from this park, gaining access to seven more lakes. If you feel at home on the water, this may be the nearby state park for you.

With hundreds of miles of shoreline and thousands of acres of water, there is ample opportunity for anglers to catch such fish as yellow bass, northern pike, crappie, and bluegill. If you like knowing exactly where your meat comes from, you’ll love that in the fall, the park is closed to everyone but registered hunters. If you stop by the park office, you can get permission to hunt:

  • Dove
  • Waterfowl
  • Deer
  • Pheasant

3. Rock Cut State Park

Finally, there is a special place in our hearts for Rock Cut State Park at 7223 West Lane Rd. The area is great for camping, featuring such amenities as a boat launch, toilets, and showers. However, this state park is great for a lot more than camping. For instance, there are 14 miles of horseback riding trails, 23 miles of mountain biking trails, and 40 miles of hiking trails.

Regardless of what your outdoor hobbies are, you can find something enjoyable within driving distance of Woodstock. However, the most amazing nearby state parks are not accessible by public transit.
